SHORT BIO
YUICHI HIRAKAWA
DRUMMER & BANDLEADER
For nearly three decades, drummer and bandleader Yuichi Hirakawa has built his reputation in New York's jazz scene one gig at a time. Known for impeccable time, deep musical sensitivity, and a rare ability to make an ensemble feel more connected, he brings a balance of authority, energy, and space to every performance.
As a bandleader, Hirakawa has led his groups at Blue Note New York, Arthur's Tavern, and the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. As a sideman, he has performed across straight-ahead jazz, R&B, and blues at venues including Birdland, the 55 Bar, Blue Note Tokyo, and Side Door Jazz Club.
Since 2001, his own ensemble has maintained a weekly residency at Arthur's Tavern in Greenwich Village—a rare continuity in New York's ever-changing jazz scene. His experience on both sides of the bandstand has shaped an approach centered on listening, responsiveness, and serving the music first.
Originally from Tokyo, Hirakawa studied at Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship before earning a Master of Arts in Music in Jazz Performance from The City College of New York. He studied with Joe Hunt, Jon Hazilla, Greg Hopkins, Jeff Friedman, Charli Persip, Kim Plainfield, and Ron Carter, and has received both the Cuccinello Percussion Award and the Berklee Percussion Department Achievement Award.
For Hirakawa, the work remains simple: listen, show up, and make the ensemble stronger—one gig at a time.
